Meet our innovative start-up speaker pitching on the session “MEET THE STARTUPS TRANSFORMING FOOD,” Kabelo Matlala of Kasi Eats. Kasi Eats provides affordable upstream and downstream logistics solutions for SME’s in urban landscapes. Their integrated last mile platform is bringing efficiency and visibility through flexible transport logistics and real time analytics. They work with restaurants, butchers, wholesalers and small holding farms to build the farm to fork model one bite at a time.
We had the opportunity to ask Kabelo a few questions on the food and beverage industry before FoodNext. See what he had to say:
FNA: What do you believe have been the key challenges in the F&B sector over the past five years?
KM: The markets we operate in were lacking access to technology and techniques which would allow them to realise savings brought on by cooperative buying habits. Secondary and informal food businesses are a significant contributor to the Township yet, they remain significantly under served. This is why we created a platform primarily for previously disadvantaged stakeholders in the food and beverage industry.
FNA: Where do you see food delivery over the next five years?
KB: In the next five years we envision regional and possibly pan-African farm-to-fork ecosystems. Farmers will be able to properly predict demand, while bulk buyers and end users will be able view insightful data on every morsel of produce consumed. This will significantly drive down the cost of doing business for various layers of the F&B supply chain.
FNA: The F&B sector is undergoing huge change. What role does your business aim to play in the coming five years?
KB: Kasi Eats is disrupting the food and beverage industry by fragmenting traditional supply chains. We create meaningful and symbiotic relationships between restaurants, farmers, and wholesalers. In the coming five years we aim to give secondary and be informal enterprises an advantage when competing with new Global entrants to their local markets.
